What Is The Meaning Of This, Mr. President?
A pro APC government newspaper carried the following headline, "those who perpetrated the violence in Kono and Bo will not participate in the November elections" in its Tuesday, January 25 edition. The paper alleged these words were uttered by his Excellency President Ernest Bai Koroma when he launched the ongoing Biometric registration exercise at the Brima Attouga stadium last Sunday afternoon.
As if to authenticate its story, the newspaper carried a photograph of the head of state delivering his statement while he was surrounded by party officials and cronies.
Readers will note that there is a conspicuous absence of any reference to the thugs who brutalized ordinary civilians in a local government bye election in a ward in the Soro-Gbeima chiefdom of Pujehun District and the men and women in the SLPP headquarters in Freetown.
The President had himself set up a commission of inquiry into the incidents which disrupted the elections after several citizens had been assaulted with many left injured. The commission completed its task and handed in their findings and recommendations to the head of state himself. Having read the report and discovered that that some of his very close associates, including a minister and some notorious security details were indicted with recommendations as to their fate, the chief executive quietly put the report aside and probably hoped the public would forget about the two incidents, much the same way as he had treated other incidents of APC provoked violence since he came to power.
Despite several reminders from the opposition SLPP and others, he has treated the very serious matter with absolute contempt. Like many other issues often raised by the opposition, he has simply deliberately given a deaf ear to them.
Some months ago, his deputy minister of information and communication, Sheka Tarawali, said at the government’s own weekly news conference that the report was ready and that the new Attorney General and minister of justice had delayed the preparation of the government white paper because of a change of leadership in his office.
As I have stated, that was almost six months ago.
And now we have the head of state making an important announcement relating to political violence in which he deliberately makes no reference to such a very important report.
According to the newspaper report, he said that those involved in the Kono and Bo violence would not participate in the forthcoming November elections.
Is his Excellency prejudging the issue?
Is he certain that those allegedly involved would be found guilty and that is the punishment that the courts would inflict on them?
From that point of view alone, I have concluded that the head of state - that is the fountain of justice, has deliberately or otherwise compromised the independence of the judiciary. An English expression says that “example is better than precept,”
What must we conclude from the statement?
But of equal importance is the head of state’s conspicuous silence on the Shear-Moses commission report.
Why does our minister of information and communication not come out with a statement that “as far as his Excellency and the APC government are concerned, the Shear-Moses commission report is ‘buff’?” and that we might as well forget about it. That way, we and especially the international community who continue to pour money into the election process, may conclude that their taxpayers money is going down the drain.
I must ask my countrymen of whatever political opinion whether this government and its head deserve a second term?
In the meantime, all opposition parties with the exception of the Mohamed Bangura's APC satellite - the UDM - should urge their members to make sure that they register in order to oust this insensitive regime next November.
So, the minister of energy and water resources has been given the red card by his boss? I had thought that the man originally came into the APC fold as a professional technocrat, but his subsequent language would suggest that he had been fully initiated into the lie-lie system. Look at what we are now experiencing in place of "the 24 hours uninterrupted, clean and affordable electricity?"
I hope his sacking is not related to the consultancy agreement which it was reported he had only signed reluctantly.
Poor Ogunade Davidson!
